Pyro-Guard/Woven Silica Tape
Industrial Energy Products (IEP) offers advanced thermal protection through its Pyro-Guard™ system and woven silica tape products. These fire protective products are engineered to shield critical infrastructure from extreme heat, fire, and electrical hazards, while supporting compliance with strict industry safety standards.
The Pyro-Guard product line includes woven silica tape, heat resistant silica blankets, braided sleeving, and silicone-coated protective materials. Multiple tested installation methods are available, providing adaptable solutions for cables, cable bundles, equipment enclosures, and more.
Pyro-Guard: Comprehensive Thermal Protection
The Pyro-Guard system is a flexible, high-performance solution designed to safeguard cables, hoses, and equipment in high-temperature environments. It combines high-grade woven silica materials with optional coatings and fastening features to provide:
- Fire Resistance: Protects against direct flame exposure and molten metal splashes.
- Thermal Insulation: Reduces heat transfer to maintain the integrity of underlying components.
- Durability: Withstands harsh industrial conditions, including exposure to moisture, abrasion, and environmental hazards.
- Adaptable Installation: Offers a range of application methods to suit varied cable sizes, layouts, and safety requirements.
Pyro-Guard is ideal for power generation, petrochemical plants, manufacturing, aerospace, and other industries where thermal hazards are a critical concern.
Woven Silica Tape: High-Temperature Insulation
IEP’s woven silica tape is produced from high-purity silica fibers (98% amorphous silicon dioxide), offering exceptional performance in extreme heat environments. Key features include:
- High Heat Resistance: Continuous service up to 1,800°F (982°C), withstanding short-term exposure up to 3,000°F (1,650°C).
- Flexibility: Easily conforms to irregular shapes, making it ideal for use as heat resistant cable wrap.
- Low Thermal Conductivity: Minimizes heat transfer, protecting sensitive components.
- Moisture and Abrasion Resistance: Available with silicone coatings for applications in harsher environments.
Available in a range of widths, tapes and blankets are suited for both spiral and longitudinal wrap installations.
Heat Resistant Silica Blanket and Cable Wrap Options
In addition to tapes, IEP manufactures heat resistant silica blanket materials and heat-resistant cable wrap solutions. These options provide broader surface coverage, enhanced durability, and additional flexibility for larger cable assemblies, panels, and piping systems.
Installation Methods for Pyro-Guard Systems Using Woven Silica Tape
To provide optimal thermal protection and compliance with safety standards, Pyro-Guard systems, fabricated from high-grade woven silica tape, can be installed using several tested methods suited for different applications.
Method A
Pyro-Guard can be conveniently wrapped around cables or cable bundles using flexible silica textiles made from 98% amorphous silicon dioxide. It comes in 6", 12", 24", and 36" widths with ceramic tie cords and Velcro straps for easy installation. A minimum of two wraps is recommended. The material has low chloride content and can withstand temperatures up to 3000°F.
Method B
Pyro-Guard woven silica tapes come in 1", 2", 4", and 6" widths, each 50 feet long. For most installations, the tape is wrapped spirally around the cable or cable bundle with at least 50% overlap. The tape should be secured at the ends and along the cable using ceramic cord to prevent the wrap from shifting or telescoping.
Method C
Pyro-Guard woven silica tapes are offered in 1", 2", 4", and 6" widths by 50-foot lengths and include an overwrap of adhesive-backed glass tape. As in Method B, the silica tape is wrapped spirally around the cable or bundle with a 50% minimum overlap. The adhesive-backed glass tape is then applied over the wrapped silica tape in the opposite direction, also with a 50% minimum overlap.
Method D
Pyro-Guard RB 1800 combines 50% 188CH silica blanket with 50% silicone-coated 188CH silica blanket, offering moisture and abrasion resistance for installation in harsh environments. It is available in widths of 6", 12", 18", 24", and 36" by 50-foot lengths. For most installations, RB 1800 is wrapped longitudinally around the cable or cable bundle, with the silicone-coated side facing outward. A minimum of two wraps is recommended.
Method E
Pyro-Guard braided sleeving is offered in plain braided or silicone-coated versions, with inside diameters ranging from 1/8 inch to 3 inches. It is packaged in 10- or 25-pound spools. Typically, the sleeving is applied before terminating single cables or conductors in panels or enclosures. It is also commonly used to tie cable bundles and secure blankets.
